Calling Teachers, Arts Professionals and Libraries

If you would like to find out more about our set of spoken word workshops, please email Joelle Taylor at jtaylor@poetrysociety.org.uk or call her on 07847 372 892.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE – FULL DAYS

Day One: Introduction to the poet/ spoken word artist plus performance for the class. Writing and stimulus exercises, poetic techniques, rhythm and beatbox patterns, melody in word, writing for the stage. Creation of entry.

Day Two: Performance skills – taking the stage, learning your piece, body language. Rehearsals. Filming.

NOTE: These workshops are designed to focus on one group of young people who are particularly interested in poetry, spoken word, theatre or music – and not for taking round to every class in school. We recommend that you select a masterclass group (based on interest rather than academic ability – freestylers, singers, beatboxers and writers) of no more than 15, who will stay with the poet for 2 days. The best workshops draw participants from across the school body.

If you want to get started right away, then download our Teachers Toolkit which features a selection of stimulus exercises.

SLAMbassadors UK is an excellent and innovative way of getting your students involved in the art of performance poetry, and helps improve standards of literacy, as well as raising confidence and developing communication skills. As the theme of the slam is ‘Identity’, it will very much involve the discussion of socio-political issues, and is a great way of provoking debate in the classroom. So, whether you teach English, Drama, History or Citizenship, the slam can be relevant. Please note that all entries are vetted and will contain no offensive language.

Read about the Slam’s input into the government’s ten year strategy for young people.

And why not show past entries to your students via your SmartBoard? Use it stimulate discussion, and to inspire entries:
